Mesalamine tablets are an anti-inflammatory medication used to treat ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They work by reducing inflammation in the lining of the colon, helping to relieve symptoms such as diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and abdominal pain. Mesalamine is thought to act locally in the colon by inhibiting the production of certain inflammatory chemicals like prostaglandins and leukotrienes. These tablets are typically used for both the treatment of active disease and maintenance of remission to prevent flare-ups.

  • Mesalamine is primarily used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, helping to reduce inflammation in the colon.
  • It belongs to a class of drugs called aminosalicylates, which are anti-inflammatory agents acting locally in the gut.
  • Mesalamine works by blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
  • The medication helps relieve common symptoms of ulcerative colitis, including diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and abdominal discomfort.
