Lubiprostone (Amitiza®) is a chloride channel activator typically prescribed to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC), irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), and opioid-induced constipation in adults. It increases intestinal fluid secretion, which softens the stool and facilitates easier, more regular bowel movements. This mechanism helps alleviate uncomfortable symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, and straining often leading to more consistent digestive outcomes and comfort.
Unlike stimulant laxatives, lubiprostone does not force bowel contractions. Instead, it enhances the body’s natural process by promoting the movement of fluid into the intestines, making it a potentially gentler and potentially safer long-term option for individuals with chronic constipation. Consistent daily use is often advised to maintain relief.
How To Use:
Take lubiprostone exactly as prescribed, typically twice daily with food and water to minimize nausea. Capsules must be swallowed whole—do not chew or crush. Relief may begin within 24 hours of the first dose; however, regular use is often needed for sustained effectiveness, especially in chronic conditions.
Precautions:
Do not use if you have a known mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headache, and abdominal discomfort. It's recommended to contact a healthcare provider if severe symptoms occur or if constipation does not improve.
