Metronidazole vaginal gel is a prescription antibacterial medication commonly prescribed for bacterial vaginosis (BV), a condition associated with an imbalance of normal vaginal bacteria. BV may present with symptoms such as thin grayish-white discharge and an unpleasant odor. The gel formulation delivers the active ingredient directly to the vaginal area, which generally results in lower systemic absorption compared to oral formulations.
Metronidazole works by inhibiting the growth of anaerobic bacteria linked to BV. While it does not directly “restore” vaginal flora, reducing the overgrowth of harmful bacteria may help support a healthier microbial balance.
How to Use:
As directed by your healthcare provider, the typical regimen involves inserting one full applicator of gel intravaginally at bedtime for 5 consecutive days. In patients with recurrent BV, some providers may prescribe suppressive therapy (for example, one applicator twice weekly for several months). Improvement in symptoms may be noticed within a few days, but the full course should be completed exactly as prescribed. Keep applicators sealed in their original packaging until use.
Important Notes and Warnings:
-
Do not consume alcohol during therapy and for at least 72 hours after the last dose, as combining metronidazole with alcohol may cause nausea, vomiting, flushing, or headache.
-
Avoid use of tampons, douches, or vaginal intercourse during the treatment period unless your healthcare provider instructs otherwise.
