Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine used to relieve itching caused by allergic skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis and hives. Due to its effects on certain receptors in the brain, it may also be used to treat anxiety and tension. It is taken as needed and is for short-term use (less than 4 months) since tolerance develops over time and may decrease effectiveness of hydroxyzine.

    Side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and constipation. Severe side effects may include cognitive dysfucntion, QT prolongation, and tosades de pointes and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis.
