Ezetimibe is a medication that helps lower cholesterol by preventing the absorption of cholesterol through the digestive tract into the body. Ezetimibe can be used alone or in combination with a statin.
- Prevents the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract
- Used as alone when statin drugs are not tolerated or as add-on treatment when statin drugs alone do not lower cholesterol to goal
- Can be taken at the same time as statin or fenofibrate if taken concurrently, but must separate if taken with binding medications including cholestyramine

Side effects include joint pain, diarrhea, loss of strength and energy, and muscle weakness.
