Atorvastatin is a statin medication used to lower elevated cholesterol levels, particularly LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, while increasing HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. It’s commonly prescribed for individuals with high cholesterol, a history of cardiovascular events, or multiple risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
By blocking the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, atorvastatin reduces cholesterol production in the liver and helps prevent atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in arteries).
How to Use:
Typical dosage range: 10 mg to 80 mg once daily. Dose may be adjusted based on cholesterol levels, cardiovascular risk, or age and medication tolerance.
Older adults (65+) often start at lower doses to reduce side effect risk
Atorvastatin can be taken at any time of day, with or without food
Important: Do not consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking atorvastatin, as it can increase the risk of side effects by interfering with how the body processes the medication.
Liver function and cholesterol levels should be monitored periodically
