Repatha contains evolocumab, a monoclonal antibody that belongs to a class of medications known as PCSK9 inhibitors. It works by blocking the PCSK9 protein, which increases the number of LDL receptors available on liver cells. As a result, the liver is able to remove more LDL cholesterol from the blood, leading to significant reductions in LDL cholesterol levels. Repatha is commonly prescribed for adults with primary hyperlipidemia, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and for certain patients with established cardiovascular disease who require additional LDL cholesterol lowering despite maximally tolerated statin therapy.
Repatha may also be used in specific patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia to help reduce LDL cholesterol levels. The medication is administered by subcutaneous injection, typically every two weeks depending on the prescribed regimen. Patients should continue following a cholesterol-lowering diet and any other therapies recommended by their healthcare provider while using Repatha. Regular monitoring of cholesterol levels helps assess treatment response and guide ongoing management.
Common side effects of Repatha include injection site reactions, cold or flu-like symptoms, back pain, joint pain, muscle pain, and upper respiratory tract infections. Some patients may experience redness, swelling, bruising, or discomfort at the injection site. Serious side effects are uncommon but can include allergic reactions such as rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.
