Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops

Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic solution is a prescription fluoroquinolone antibiotic eye drop used to treat bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) and corneal ulcers. It works by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for bacterial replication, which halts the growth and spread of infection-causing bacteria directly at the site of infection.

This medication is typically prescribed to be used in the affected eye(s) multiple times per day over several days, depending on the severity and type of infection. It can significantly reduce redness, discharge, swelling, and irritation, leading to faster healing and relief from symptoms.

Ciprofloxacin eye drops are generally well-tolerated when used as prescribed and begin working shortly after application. Proper administration is key to maximizing its effectiveness and preventing reinfection.

How to Use:

Wash hands thoroughly before each use

Remove contact lenses before applying

Tilt head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid, and instill the prescribed number of drops

Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface

Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting contact lenses (if approved by a healthcare provider)

Warnings:

For ophthalmic use only; do not ingest

Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early

Discontinue and consult a provider if severe irritation, swelling, or vision changes occur

Do not use to treat viral or fungal eye infections

Ciprofloxacin eye drops side effects may include temporary stinging or burning of your eyes for a minute or two when applied, eye discomfort or irritation, eye itching, eye redness, tearing, eyelid crusting, feeling as if something is in your eye, blurred vision, dry or watery eyes, puffy eyelids, a bad taste in your mouth, sensitivity to light, a white-colored buildup in your eye (if you are being treated for corneal ulcer), nausea, or unpleasant taste in your mouth after using the drops.
