Progesterone is a female hormone used to help prevent endometrial hyperplasia associated with estrogen therapy. Endometrial hyperplasia is a precancerous condition in which there is an irregular thickening of the uterine lining. This may cause uncomfortable symptoms for women, including heavy menstrual periods, postmenopausal bleeding, and anemia due to the excess bleeding.

  • Used to lower the chance of endometrial changes after menopause in people who are getting estrogen therapy
  • Must be 60 years of age or younger or within 10 years of menopause
  • Must be currently using estrogen therapy and have an intact uterus
  • May be administered either cyclically (200mg once daily for 12 days each month) or continuously (100mg daily)
