Sucralfate is a prescription medication used to treat and prevent duodenal ulcers, which occur in the first part of the small intestine just beyond the stomach. It works by forming a protective coating over the ulcer site, shielding it from stomach acid, bile salts, and enzymes. This barrier helps prevent further irritation and allows the ulcer to heal more quickly.
In addition to treating active ulcers, sucralfate may be used for maintenance therapy to help prevent recurrence.
Usage Instructions:
Take exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider
Typically taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water
Avoid taking antacids within 30 minutes of a dose
Separate sucralfate from other oral medications by at least 2 hours to prevent interference with absorption
Continue taking for the full duration prescribed, even if symptoms improve sooner
Warnings & Precautions:
Use with caution if you have kidney disease, as aluminum can accumulate in the body
May cause side effects such as constipation, dry mouth, stomach upset, or dizziness
Rarely, allergic reactions may occur. Seek medical attention if you experience rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing
