Omeprazole, the generic for Prilosec, is an oral medication used to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid, including severe acid reflux, GERD, erosive esophagitis, and stomach ulcers. It belongs to a medication class called proton pump inhibitors. Omeprazole works by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces.
How to Use:
Omeprazole is generally taken before a meal, often 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Swallow tablets or capsules as directed, and do not chew, cut, or crush them unless your specific dosage form allows it. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose.
Warnings & Precautions:
Tell your prescribing provider about pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney problems, low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, lupus, or long-term PPI use. Omeprazole can interact with clopidogrel, warfarin, methotrexate, certain HIV medicines, rifampin, and St. John's wort. Contact a provider if you develop severe diarrhea, rash, allergic reaction symptoms, or signs of kidney problems.
Side effects may include headache, upset stomach, stomach pain, diarrhea, and gas.
