Phenazopyridine tablets (Pyridium®) are a prescription medication commonly prescribed to relieve urinary discomfort. They work as a urinary tract analgesic, providing relief from burning, pain, urgency, and frequency that may accompany urinary tract infections (UTIs) or irritation from medical procedures. Phenazopyridine does not treat the underlying infection but helps reduce symptoms while an antibiotic or other treatment addresses the cause.
Patients often notice symptom relief within hours of taking the first dose. Because phenazopyridine only provides temporary relief, it is typically prescribed for short-term use, usually no more than 2 days, while awaiting the effects of antibiotic therapy.
How to Use
-
Often prescribed as one tablet taken orally three times daily after meals.
-
The dose and duration should be taken exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.
-
Treatment is typically limited to the first 2 days of antibiotic therapy for a UTI.
-
Tablets should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed or crushed.
Important Notes and Warnings

This medication should not be used in patients with severe kidney disease or those who are allergic to phenazopyridine.

Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding before use.
