Ketoconazole is an oral antifungal medication indicated for the treatment of certain systemic fungal infections in patients who cannot tolerate or do not respond to other antifungal therapies. Ketoconazole acts by interfering with fungal cell membrane formation, helping to stop infection spread and inhibit fungal growth.
Ketoconazole is effective against specific fungal conditions including blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, paracoccidioidomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, and chromomycosis. It is not approved for common fungal conditions such as Candida infections, onychomycosis (nail fungus), cutaneous dermatophyte infections, or fungal meningitis.
How To Use: Tablets should be taken at least 2 hours before taking antacids or other medications that alter stomach pH to ensure proper absorption.
Precautions: Liver function should be monitored before and during treatment. Do not use in combination with certain medications (including but not limited to: dofetilide, quinidine, pimozide, cisapride) due to risk of life-threatening arrhythmias. Always use under supervision of a healthcare provider.
