Valacyclovir is used for the treatment and prevention of the herpes simplex virus (HSV), including oral herpes (HSV-1) and genital herpes (HSV-2). Duration of treatment ranges from 1 to 5 days.

- Decreases the length of time and severity of the outbreak, and the pain and itching associated with the outbreak
- While improving the healing process, it keeps new sores from developing
- Typically taken twice daily for 1 to 5 days
- Optimal treatment begins within 72 hours of diagnosis and 24 hours of recurring outbreak
