Metformin is a medication used to help lower blood sugar for Type 2 diabetes, typically in addition to lifestyle intervention of diet and exercise.  

  • Used for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes in patients who need additional support to diet and exercise modification
  • Typical starting dose is 500 mg twice daily, and may be increased gradually to minimize side effects
  • Maintenance dose is generally 500 mg to 1 g (1,000 mg) twice daily
  • May be taken with food to help and recommended to supplement with vitamin B12
  • Metformin requires adequate kidney function so it must be used with caution in those with kidney impairment or 65 years and older
