How to Take Alendronate, unless otherwise directed by your provider:
Take first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach with a full glass of water
Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medications
Remain upright (sitting or standing) for at least 30 minutes after taking to prevent esophageal irritation
Alendronate is typically taken once weekly unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider
Alendronate tablets side effects may include the following:
Common side effects often involve the digestive system and may include abdominal pain, acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, or nausea. Some people experience mild musculoskeletal pain, such as joint or back pain. Headache and dizziness may also occur.
Less common but more serious side effects include esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), esophageal ulcers, and difficulty swallowing, especially if the medication is not taken exactly as instructed. Rarely, alendronate may cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, particularly following dental surgery or in patients with cancer or poor oral hygiene. Another rare but serious effect is atypical femur fractures, which can happen with long-term use and minimal or no trauma.
Patients are advised to report any new or worsening bone, joint, or thigh pain, as well as any difficulty or pain when swallowing, chest pain, or heartburn, which may signal more serious complications. Staying upright and following all administration instructions can help reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects.
