Xifaxan is an antibiotic used to treat travelers’ diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli). It works by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, effectively stopping the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines. Unlike other antibiotics, Xifaxan is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream, which helps reduce systemic side effects. This targeted action makes it a well-tolerated option for managing mild to moderate cases of travelers’ diarrhea. However, it is not effective for diarrhea caused by other pathogens such as viruses or invasive bacteria like Campylobacter or Salmonella.

Xifaxan is used to treat travelers’ diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli), a common bacterial cause of diarrhea in travelers.

Xifaxan primarily acts in the intestines, with minimal absorption into the bloodstream, reducing the risk of systemic side effects.

Because of its localized effect, it has a lower risk of causing antibiotic resistance compared to systemically absorbed antibiotics.

If symptoms persist beyond three days or worsen, medical attention is advised, as an alternative treatment may be needed.

am using this medication as indicated for the treatment of traveler's diarrhea caused by noninvasive strains of Escherichia coli
have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to rifaximin (Xifaxan), other rifamycin antibiotics, or any component of the formulation (more information can be found at www.fda.gov)
will monitor for hypersensitivity reactions, temperature, and changes in symptoms during treatment
have serum ammonia levels checked as clinically indicated
am not pregnant or breastfeeding
do not have diarrhea complicated by fever or blood in the stool or diarrhea due to pathogens other than E. coli
do not have a history of liver or kidney impairment
understand that rifaximin(Xifaxan) is not for treatment of systemic infections and is not effective against invasive pathogens that cause infectious diarrhea, such as Campylobacter jejuni, Shigella spp, and Salmonella spp
understand rifaximin(Xifaxan) may cause Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) and other superinfections, especially with prolonged use or repeated courses of treatment
understand rifaximin(Xifaxan) may cause severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis
understand rifaximin(Xifaxan) may cause hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema
will not take bacillus clausii, cholera vaccine, fecal microbiota (live), sodium picosulfate, or typhoid vaccine concurrently with this medication

Xifaxan® side effects may include the following: nausea, vomiting, constipation, bloating, gas, stomach pain, feeling like you need to urgently empty your bowel, feeling your bowel is not completely empty, headache, dizziness, tired feeling, or swelling in your hands, feet, or torso.
