Mounjaro is the first and only medication in its class, known as a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It works by mimicking two natural hormones (incretins) that your gut releases when you eat:<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By activating both of these pathways, Mounjaro provides control over blood sugar and also helps reduce appetite.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mounjaro\u00a0is an injectable liquid that comes in a single-use auto-injector pen. It is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>To let your body adjust and to minimize side effects, your doctor may start you on a low dose.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Starting Dose\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>The treatment begins at 2.5 mg injected once weekly for 4 weeks. This is not a therapeutic dose for blood sugar control but is intended to help you tolerate\u00a0the medication.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Titration\u00a0\u2013<\/span><\/b>\u00a0After 4 weeks, your doctor will increase your dose to\u00a05 mg\u00a0once weekly\u00a0if\u00a0tolerating the medication.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n

    Off-Label Uses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You may see\u00a0Mounjaro\u00a0prescribed for uses that are not \u201cFDA-approved.\u201d This is\u00a0a very common\u00a0and legal practice called \u201coff-label\u201d prescribing, where a doctor uses their clinical judgment to prescribe a drug for a different (but well-researched) purpose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Mounjaro\u00a0is widely prescribed \u201coff-label\u201d for chronic weight management in adults who are overweight or obese.\u00a0While\u00a0Mounjaro\u00a0is not officially FDA-approved for weight loss, its active ingredient, tirzepatide, is approved for this use under the brand name\u00a0Zepbound.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n
