Wegovy is in a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists (or “incretin mimetics”). It works by copying the action of a natural hormone in your body called GLP-1.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the injectible form and tablet form of Wegovy works the same way. Wegovy\u00a0targets areas of the brain that are involved in regulating appetite and food intake. It also slows down “gastric emptying,” the process of food leaving your stomach. This dual action makes you feel full sooner and for a longer period, which helps reduce your overall calorie intake and leads to weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dosing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wegovy\u00a0is most commonly administered via a single-use, auto-injector pen, but can also be administered as an oral tablet. For both injectibles and tablets, the dose is “titrated,” meaning it is\u00a0started\u00a0low and\u00a0increased\u00a0gradually.\u00a0This slow ramp-up is critical for minimizing gastrointestinal side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      FDA-Approved Uses<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Wegovy\u00a0is prescribed as part of a long-term weight management plan that includes a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Its approved uses are:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      • Chronic Weight Management\u00a0–\u00a0<\/span><\/b>In adults with obesity (BMI \u2265 30) or overweight (BMI \u2265 27) with at least one weight-related comorbidity. It is also approved for children 12 and older with obesity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Cardiovascular Risk Reduction\u00a0–<\/span><\/b>\u00a0To reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke, death) in adults with established cardiovascular disease\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span><\/i>\u00a0obesity or overweight.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH)\u00a0–\u00a0<\/span><\/b>To treat MASH (formerly NASH), a type of fatty liver disease, in adults with moderate-to-advanced liver scarring.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n

        Off-Label Uses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        You may see Wegovy prescribed for uses that are not “FDA-approved.” This is a very common and legal practice called “off-label” prescribing, where a doctor uses their clinical judgment to prescribe a drug for a different (but well-researched) purpose. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The active ingredient in Wegovy, semaglutide, is approved for treating Type 2 Diabetes under the brand name Ozempic. Wegovy itself is generally not prescribed off-label as it is already indicated for weight management. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n
