You\u2019ve given up hours, sometimes days, and likely experienced more stress than you expected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s a lot like renovating a \u201csmall\u201d part of your home. You start with the idea of just replacing the kitchen faucet, but once you open the cabinet, you discover a leak, realize the pipes are outdated, and end up replacing the sink and all of the plumbing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What seemed like a quick, routine update turns into a time-consuming, expensive project.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prescription refills can work the same way; you go in expecting one simple step, but the chain of appointments, add-on costs, delays, and inconveniences quickly piles up, especially for those who rely on their medication every day.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And unlike a frustrating home project, the stakes here are much higher; these costs can have a direct effect on your health. But these \u201cobvious\u201d expenses often add up to more than patients expect, especially when no lab work or tests are required.\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Doctor or Clinic Visits<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0Many prescriptions \u2014 even for patients who have been stable for years \u2014 require at least an annual follow-up appointment before a refill is approved. For controlled substances or medications with higher monitoring requirements, the visit may be as frequent as every three to six months.\u00a0For uninsured patients, these visits can run $75-$200 for a standard follow-up, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talktomira.com\/post\/the-cost-of-a-doctor-visit-without-insurance\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">according to Mira<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. For insured patients, copays typically range from $20 to $60, but high-deductible plans can mean paying the full cost until the deductible is met.\u00a0Specialists push this cost even higher. Psychiatrists for mental health medications or cardiologists for heart medications often charge more. And, with many practices operating with limited appointment slots, it\u2019s not uncommon for patients to wait weeks or months to see the right provider, further delaying refills.\u00a0For patients in rural areas, these visits may require traveling to another city entirely. That travel comes with its own costs \u2014 both financial and time-related.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Transportation Expenses<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0Getting to your appointment and the pharmacy is rarely free. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-issues-standard-mileage-rates-for-2024-mileage-rate-increases-to-67-cents-a-mile-up-1-point-5-cents-from-2023\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Using the IRS mileage rate for 2024<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of $0.67 per mile, a typical 10-mile round trip in a city costs $6.70 in fuel and vehicle wear. For rural residents, a 20\u201350 mile round trips cost between $13.40 and $33.50.\u00a0Those without cars may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/upgradedpoints.com\/travel\/how-much-does-uber-cost-per-mile\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">pay $10\u2013$25 each way<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for rideshare or taxi services. Public transit may cost $4 for a round trip, but can require extra walking, long transfers, or schedules that don\u2019t line up with appointment times.\u00a0These costs are increasing because pharmacies are closing at record rates. Between 2010 and 2021 alone, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/schaeffer.usc.edu\/research\/pharmacy-closures-united-states-health-affairs\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">1 in 3 pharmacies shut down across the United States<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0TelyRx co-founder Thomas McKinney highlighted the growing \u201cpharmacy desert\u201d trend in a \u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/opinion\/articles\/2025-08-26\/pharmacy-prescription-telehealth-rite-aid-drug-prices\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">recent U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, noting &#8220;When pharmacies close in areas already short of doctors and other healthcare services, it creates a potentially life-threatening situation for people who have chronic conditions and depend on consistent medication access.&#8221;\u202f\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lost Wages<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0Time is money, and refill appointments take both. The average outpatient visit \u2014 including travel, waiting, and the appointment itself \u2014 takes about 2.4 hours. At the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2025\/average-hourly-earnings-for-all-private-nonfarm-employees-rose-by-8-cents-in-june-2025.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">U.S. average hourly wage of $36.30<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, that\u2019s $87.12 in lost income for a single visit.\u00a0For gig and shift workers without paid leave, this can mean losing a half-day\u2019s pay. In addition, parents may be forced to use vacation time for medical appointments, cutting into the time they can spend resting or connecting with family.\u00a0For patients who use telehealth platforms like TelyRx, the appointment component can often be handled in under 10 minutes from home, at any time of day or night, eliminating the wage loss associated with taking hours away from work for basic prescription renewals.\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pharmacy Wait Times and Repeat Trips<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0Unfortunately, the challenges don\u2019t end once you\u2019ve made it to the pharmacy counter. For many patients, the waiting continues. Surveys show that the average pharmacy wait time ranges anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. That\u2019s nearly the length of a lunch break \u2014 time most people don\u2019t have to spare. And that\u2019s assuming everything goes smoothly. If you have to call the pharmacy, phone wait times to speak to an actual pharmacy team member or pharmacist can often exceed 20-30 minutes.\u00a0In reality, many patients spend even longer waiting in line, only to be told their prescription isn\u2019t ready or isn\u2019t in stock. National drug shortages have become increasingly common, and rural pharmacies in particular may only receive certain medications on limited shipment schedules. That means instead of walking out with your medication, you\u2019re sent home empty-handed and told to try again tomorrow.\u00a0Every additional trip comes at its own cost. Transportation costs double.
